Part two from my “fetch a ride”-fashion series with Kristin Folstad from Trend Models.

Here are two pictures from the photo shoot my Kristin Folstad, Trend Models, earlier this month. The images are shot in natural light with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and 24-105 f/4L, not quite the ultimate camera to use outdoors, in my opinion.

This weekend there will be a little calmer on the photo front with only two photo shoots, model testing and possibly baby photography. Days and weeks go by or to portraiture and group photography of children, adolescents and adults aged six months to retirement.

Last weekend I was on a little relaxation trip to Oslo and played a role as a tourist. I was a little trip to the opera roof, Akershus Fortress, Aker Brygge, trawled up and down Karl Johan and the overall two hours Jernbanetorget. Apart from the barrier around the government quarter, there were no major changes since I lived there in 2002/03 as a conscript in His Majesty the King’s Guard.

Here are six pictures from my photo shoot with Kristin Folstad, from Trend Models, this weekend wearing a orange sweater and jeans. The photo is naturally lit, no fancy flashes and no reflectors, just straight up against the wall on a parking lot in down-town Trondheim (Yes, it makes Trondheim sound like a huge city). Anyway, Kristin had dyed her hair and needed some new pictures for her portfolio. Her new hair colour matched her well and making it easier for me to spot the difference between Kristin and her twin sister Marie Folstad.

Today I had my first model testing in ages, it felt. I photographed Kristin Folstad from Trend Models, the model agency here in Trondheim, downtown Trondheim. I had planned for an open shadow-shoot and the overcast weather provided the perfect light for todays shoot. Though it started to pour down half way through and we had to pack up our things and finish of.
Styling and make-up was done by Kristin, clothes are mainly from Gina Tricot. Tomorrow I’ll have my last model testing this weekend, hope the weather doesn’t ruin the shoot. I am hoping to borrow a Canon 5D Mk II of my room mate to shot a short film too.

A double exposure beauty portrait of Kristin Folstad from Trend Models. The portraits in this series of Kristin was taken during the photo marathon we had at school for a competition in creating a poster for Trondheim Jazzfest. Maybe I should have gone with this photo instead of the one I delivered for the contest.

Making this photo

The technical aspect of making this photo is quite easy. Set up the lighting you want. For this type of image you’ll need a flash, either a studio strobe or a speedlight. Place your model and instruct her what to do when the flash fires. Find the focus point. Set the aperture to whatever you have metered the the light setup. Shutter speed is crucial for this type of images, instead of freezing the image with a shutter of 1/125 or 1/250 or what ever you normally use in studio photography, turn the shutter speed to about two or three seconds to give the model time to do what you have instructed her or him to do. Keep the ambient light low or if you can control it, switch all existing light off to have a pitch black studio. Press down the shutter button, trigger the flash manually as many times as you want. The more exposures you have, the lighter and abstract the images get. I tend to stick with two or three exposures.

Part four of the beauty portrait series with Kristin Folstad. This picture stands out from the rest of the series because of the models mood. She is a bit sweeter and more happy, other than that the lighting and makeup is the same.

This weeks courses

This week and the two next weeks we are going to photograph magazine portraits of a production line companies. Like the ones we shot for Prima AS last spring. I am thinking about going back to Orkdal to see if any Orkel would be interested in a having me photographing for them.

Before I start post production of my architecture photos I decided to publish yet another beauty portrait of Kristin Folstad. Makeup artist is still Hong-My Thi Nguyen, a first grader at Norsk Fotofagskole. Fun fact: Kristins sister was modelling for Jon Danielsen yesterday as he was shooting his fashion assignment. This is the second picture in my series I shot with Kristin Folstad yesterday. The shot was taken for a poster-competition and the photo marathon that is ongoing these three weeks in January. This is a more cute, melancholic and sweet portrait of Kristin, no hard facial expression as the first one were. Makeup and hair is done by Hong-My Thi Nguyen supervised by me.

Lighting technique

This portrait is a high-key photo which is a technique where most part of the information in the picture is on the right side of the histogram, instead of a mid-key photo which has all information spread evenly throughout the histogram, the opposite of high-key is low-key, which has all its information in the left side of the histogram. A high-key photo is fairly light and the shadow areas, which in most photos define the shape. This particular series is shot with four light sources, two Elinchrom BX Ri 600 with strip-light softbox from each side and behind the model as a kicker-light defining the models edge and one beauty dish about 45 degrees above the model and almost straight on. Since the boom wasn’t available I had to use a regular tripod. To avoid having the tripod in the models face, the beauty dish is positioned slightly to the left of the model. Also I have modified the beauty dish with a grid to give more contrast to the image. The last light is also a flash head with a softbox behind and right of the model shooting at a slight angel at the background give it a nice, even light.
The last thing in this rig is three polystyrene boards painted black, two on each side and one as a ceiling or roof above the model. This gives the image more contrast instead of having all the white walls in the studio casting reflection and killing the nice shadow the beauty dish makes.

Next assignment

We had evaluation of the Jazzfest-posters we shot today, but we couldn’t publish since it was sort of a contest. Next assignment is shooting a commercial picture of glasses. I booked two models I haven’t shot before, so I will gain a bit new experience this time as well. I am going for a classical beauty-shot with strict styling, not very different from the series I did with Kristin yesterday. I went to Brilleland in Kongensgate and got to borrow four pairs of glasses, some from the new collection from Moods of Norway. Hoping styling, models, makeup and glasses will fit well together. Studio time is from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. Wish me good luck!

Today I had a photo shoot with Kristin Folstad (Trend Models) at school for this Trondheim Jazzfest-assignment. Since I still don’t have a very good idea what I am going to do with this assignment, I shot just a beauty portrait of Kristin figuring I could try to do something more graphical in post production with her. Makeup artist at the shoot were the first grader Hong-My Thi Nguyen.
Tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. I am going to have the evaluation of my picture, so I should be doing post production on the photos I took today instead of blogging.

Bildene av Kristin Folstad (Trend Models) er fra tidligere i høst og er to bilder jeg har vært litt usikre på, men velger altså nå å legge de ut allikevel.

Tredje del i fashion-serien min fra opptaket mitt Bakgårdsfashion med Kristin Folstad fotografert tidligere i høst. Serien er fotografert på Lademoen i en campingvogn som står å råtner på en privat eiendom med piggtrådgjerde og ei fin fin hytte.

Fashion

Dette er andre del av bakgårds-fashion-opptaket jeg hadde med Kristin Folstad fra Trend Models. Serien er skutt med tanke på å fremstille situasjonen som en slags sommerfestival på tross av at det var godt utpå høsten serien ble tatt. Det er også en annen del av denne fashion-serien som er tatt med naturlig, tilstedeværende lys som gjør at bildene får et mer romantisk preg. Som modell er Kristin kjempegrei å jobbe med. Hun tar instruksjonene og spiller rollene jeg setter henne i veldig godt, og at på til tar hun seg ikke så alt for selvhøytidelig. Denne fashion-serien er ikke så veldig seriøs og vi hopper lett fra å være “spyklein” og på rav-fylla til å kødde med det som finnes på location og ha det veldig artig på opptaket. I etterbehandlinga har jeg lagt på noen filter for å få serien til å fremstå som om den er tatt lomo.

Denne helga

Ellers denne helga har jeg hatt to opptak, ett med Maren Elise Aasen med hovedtyngde på fashion og mote, hvor Susanne Amalie Nilsen fra H2 var makeup-artist. Og et portrett/fashion-opptak med Sigrid Helene Rauboti i rocke-sjangeren hvor jeg testet ut ett par nye lyssettinger.

Fremover

Denne uka er fylt med en god del foto også, frem mot lørdag er det moodboarding til opptak med grunge-bandet Tripod, et litt større musikkalbum-prosjekt. 4 eller 5 modeller booket inn av elever ved H2-Akademiet skal sminkes og friseres før de skal fotograferes av meg. Fredag kveld etter H2-opptaket er det konsert med Tripod på Blæst på Solsiden og lørdag kveld er det duket for hårshow på Crash i regi av H2-Akademiet hvor jeg skal skyte både bak kulissene og etter-bilder av arbeidet utført av frisører ved H2.

“Miss Trailer Trash Fall 2010″

Fashionserie er inspirert av diverse facebook-festival-fyllebilder og amerikansk lav-sosial-status-følelse. Modellen er Kristin Folstad fra Trend Modela og campingvogna står på Lademoen / Buran i Trondheim. Alle bildene er fotografert med en SB-900 enten på toppen av kameraet eller vedsidenav. Dette er et greit eksempel på hvordan man kan stille ned det ambiente / tilstedeværende lyset med en blits. Det jeg har gjort er å stille blitsen min til å fyre av ca 2 f-stopper over det ambiente lyset som gjør at det ser ut som bildene er tatt en sommerkveld.

Dette er en av de største produksjonene jeg har jobbet med på tross av at effektiv fotografering tok knappe 20 minutter med alt inkludert 60 eksponeringer. Tina Larsen, i samarbeid med Siri Myran fra H2-Akademiet, gjorde alt av sminke både på Ulrikke S, Susann Westermann og Kristian Vintervoll. Opplegget bak bildet var å ta et bilde i David La Chapelle-stil, pop-art og maksimalistisk.

Makeupartisten og stylisten jeg bruker på de fleste opptakene mine, Tina Larsen, har opprettet seg en egen blogg på blogg.no. I den forbindelse har hun lagt ut et innlegg med en liten omtale av samarbeidet vi har.

I løpet av det siste året har jeg hatt et tett samarbeid med fotograf Bjørn Christiansen. Bjørn er en allsidig fotograf, men vårt samarbeid har for det meste vært innen fashion. Han er en veldig god fotograf innen det meste, men skiller seg særlig ut med sine fashion bilder. (…)

Dette bildet er tatt i forbindelse med klassisk portrett på Norsk Fotofagskole og er det første portrettet jeg har tatt med et analogt mellomformatkamera. Modellen ble plukket opp på Trondheim Torg under en modellscouting i starten av første semestret.

Det nyeste bildet jeg har fotografert for Tina, av Unni Lund Olsen fra Trend Models.

Dette bildet er fra Barokk/fashion-serien jeg skøyt for Tina i forbindelse med hennes eksamensoppgave på H2-Akademiet i vår.

Tina hjalp meg å sminke Marion Dyrvik Homlong til modellkortet hennes. Maren er nå er blant finalistene i Miss Norway-konkurransen som går av stabelen 27. August i Oslo.

Bildene av Mari Lunder Krogen er i sammenheng med fashion-studio-kurset vi hadde på skolen, hvit og grå bakgrunn i studio.

Dette bildet er fra dramaturgi-kurset i høsten 2009 hvor vi skulle gjenskape Botticellis maleri Venus Fødsel i egen retning.

Dette portrettet er tatt med en Bronica mellomformat av Ane Tinmannsvik hvor jeg øvde litt på beauty-portrett.

Dette siste portrettet er også fra ett av Saschas opptak hvor jeg fikk låne Kristin litt for å ta noen egne bilder til mappen min.

Tror dette er første gangen jeg har vunnet noe som helst over noen som helst Internettkonkurranse. Denne gangen vant jeg en 5-1 reflektor fra tvspelweb.se med portrettet mitt av Kristin Folstad, som egentlig var tatt for gøy i sammenheng med “bak kulissene”-bilde for fotoopptaket til Sascha Njaa og hans oppgave “Hvit”.
Konkurransen var avholdt hos hobbyfotografen og bloggeren Benedikte Bull.
