Last Friday I grabbed my old Nikon D700 and a Nikon SB-900 and joined Tempo photographing their promotional stunt. They had printed around 1000 flayers with a free download link to their new single YOLO, a big cardboard of the single cover I shoot late April, and rented a big ass speaker. The plan was to set up a camp down town Trondheim and get people to pose with the band with the single cover in front of them while the song was playing on the speaker. Afterwards people could tag themselves and friends on their Facebook page, and of course download the single.

After around three hours of fun marketing and promoting we had about 100 different photos with people enjoying the song! The day after they had around 11 000 views on the album. Great success!

This is a practical example on how you can trick people into believing you are a sporty guy doing cross country skiing. My parents has a cabin in the mountains and yes I have done cross country skiing, slalom and snowboarding when I was younger, but the recent ten years I haven’t prioritized those activities to my parents disappointment. Anyway, these are some environmental shots I did while assisting photographer Lars-Erik Berg at a photo shoot for Jekta Storsenter and Centerteam Reklamebyrå and their easter magazine a month ago. The shot was mainly a fashion photos shoot with models in the surrounding areas of Lian Restaurant in Trondheim, but Lars-Erik also wanted some shots of the surroundings that might be used to set the mood for his series, but they were never used. Models used in the shots was Elise S and Henrik from Trend Models.

LianRestauraunt.no (in Norwegian)

Restauranten lyder navnet Lian Herregård i denne tiden.

Tips on photographing snow

It might be a bit challenging to photograph out in the snow, but a quick and easy tip for doing it is to set the correct exposure at brightest of the snowy parts in your scene, and do a 1/3rd exposure compensation. This will in the shot blow out your brightest parts of the scene, but the advantage is that your darker parts in the shot get a brighter exposure. When you are converting your shots you still have a lot of details preserved in the light areas, and you the darker areas of your shot still has full details without so much noise. This tip can also be applied if you are shooting a wedding, expose the white wedding dress instead of the dark dress of the groom. If you do so, the white wedding dress in most cases are going to get fully blown out and the details will not be as easily saved.

I have started to move slightly in the direction of DSLR filming after buying the Nikon D800 earlier this autumn. My first experience with shooting film with DSLR was at school shooting a teaser / behind the sceenes of some of my photo shoots. Doing a promo video for Charite Viken in January I wanted to do even more with this media. So this is a little teaser from a shoot I did with Ivalu Sørensen from Le Management. Doing hair and make-uo was Dorthe K. Hansen (dkstyling.blogspot.dk). The complete series will be featured in The View Magazine – Issue 9 sometime in January next year.

Starting at Fotofagskolen I was pretty fresh shooting fashion photography. I didn’t have that much experience or “the right” inspirations to build my own shoots. After learning some techniques and leafing through various fashion magazines I got an understanding of what you should do in an editorial series. In spring of my first year, Tina Larsen from fstyle.blogg.no/a> asked me to help her out on her final exam at H2 shooting an avant garde, baroque-inspired fashion series. She showed me some inspirational photos and we discussed what location we should use. Having shot a lot of photos at NTNU Gløshaugen and Hovedbygget, the choice was quite easy. For my inspiration I used Cinderella and the Czech movie Three Wishes for Cinderella (Tri orísky pro Popelku) which in Norwegian tradition is always showing on Christmas eve. Our model was Trine Eide. I called NTNU and asked to use their building for location and got a yes.
Having helping me out as an assistant on this shoot was my friend Sascha Njaa. Before the photo shoot we went to the location places and angles fit for a backdrop. The photos were to be put in Tina’s final portfolio and viewed at a catwalk show the students at H2-Akademiet had put together later that month.

Having found quite a few spots to shoot at the location I was able to shoot a huge variation for the series. This particular photo was shot in a large window facing south, at the opposite side I had my huge bed sheet reflector which gave me enough light to get a decent exposure in the front of the model. Having a stylist doing clothing, hair and make-up doing the styling of your photo shoots helps you a great deal getting the photos you want to shoot. Have common understanding on what your theme and photo style should be. Tina passed her exam and is now working as a hairdresser at Heads Up Hårsalong på Byåsen and a freelance stylist.

A few weeks ago Mr. Trondheim was to be decided at Clariton Hotel & Congress in Trondheim. As one of the members of the jury, Bjørg Helene Braaten, the rest of the co-workers at Agape Brud was invited to this event to show of wedding dresses in one of the breaks at the show. Ann Karin Williams Aastø from Ourstyle.org did the make-up and hair. Since this was a female only event, I didn’t get to shoot some pictures after the girls was done, but I shot a little promotional video for Ourstyle.org. The video is shot with Nikon D800, Nikon Nikkor 70-200 f/2.8G VRII and Nikon Nikkor 35mm f/1.4G. Enjoy!

Today I am heading out to Yellow Cock Studio to do three model testings for Modelbureauet Modelbooking. All tests are with male models and done in studio.

The picture above is from last time I did testing in Denmark, at Skyderiet and is of Malene Micha doing styling on the model Jennifer Hansen, from Modelbureauet Modelbooking.

In recent days I have photographed models from Modelbureauet Modelbooking. Tuesday I photographed Rasmus Michaelsen with clothes from Ei´kon. We used the store as a base and walked around downtown and found some locations that matched the clothes we used. Wednesday I shot four photo shoots, tree of them were polaroidshots and one larger testing with Jennifer Hansen in studio. Skyderiet which were the location of the studio shoot, was owned by Christina Lykke, a renowned photographer in Denmark. Today I have been in Aros, an art museum, to photograph Stephanie Bäckström with Maria Schläger Jensen as make-up artist and stylist.
Next week I am back doing school photography. I believe my boss is sending me on a road trip up north again, this time to Bodø, Narvik, Harstad, but I am not quite sure yet.

Here are some pictures and a video I shot of Stephanie for a half ago:

Behind the Scenes from the shoot with Marion Dyrvik Homlong, Miss Earth 2011

Yesterday I had the last shoot with Marion Dyrvik Homlong for her portfolio for Miss Earth 2011. The shoot was down town Trondheim right next to Vår Frues Kirke, the same location I did a shoot with Kristin Folstad a few weeks ago. My assistant on this recording was Karoline Holand Fosby, who also did the make-up and her hair.
Despite the sun, the cold autumn weather didn’t give us any warmth. The model was a bit frozen, the assistant was dreaming of a cup of freshly brewed coffee ground on exotic beans from Brazil and I struggled even with little sleep deprivation and cold fingers, but we still managed to accomplished a shooter without any major challenges. As you can see from the picture we keep on in open shade where I partly have the sun directly in the lens. The shutter was on average at 1/125s and aperture of f/4-5.6. ISO was set to 200 and we had plenty of natural light.

After work today I drove with my boss to Kristiansten Festning and met Liv-Miriam Nordtømme, the author of fysionett.blogg.no. Here we did a photo shoot and a recording of some video clips Liv-Miriam is going to use on her blog demonstrating simple and easy home exercises. Vegard Blakstad, my boss, and the photographer behind this image served as assistant during the shot handing me the lenses and made sure that the light was perfectly reflected on the face of Liv-Miriam. Photos and film from the recording comes during the week.
As you can see in the image of Liv-Miriam and me, so I use my tripod shoulder rig in order to stabilize the images as much as possible. It’s better than to shoot only handheld. Canon 5D MkII, I borrowed from my tenant, Charlotte Støle, who is also a photographer.

Fashion Catalogue – Last assignment

If you can see this, then you might need a Flash Player upgrade or you need to install Flash Player if it's missing. Get Flash Player from Adobe.

Last assignment

This is my last assignment at Norsk Fotofagskole. The assignment was shooting a fashion catalogue, 10 outfits, all colour, 24 pages including front and back. We were also supposed to make a little art piece using video presenting the clothes.

Today I delivered my final PDF to CopyCat in Trondheim, printing two copies of my magazine. Last night I was finished clipping and editing my little art piece and it came out quite okay.

Behind the Scenes

Storyboards, moodboards and a plan of attack were worked and evaluated in groups with our teacher Geir Terje Nergaard. Some time before Easter I made contact with Maria Nordstrøm Solberg from Modelbureauet Modelbooking, a model booking agency in Århus. She helped me find some models that needed some photos for their portfolio and could do the shoots for free. Stinne Tornøe Frederiksen, a singer in Leaving a Small Town and Stephanie Bäckström fit the catalogue profile I had planned.

Friday before Easter I left Trondheim heading towards Århus, Saturday Mimoza Rrusta, my stylist at the shoot, and I went out looking for clothes and shoes that matched the profile. Mainly looking at stores at Bruuns Galleri in Århus having a tight budget we stuck to Vero Moda, H&M, Bestseller, MbyM and BikBok. As usual Bianco Footwear (Århus) were as kind as to lend me two pair of shoes. Sunday we, Mimoza and I, took the bus to Moesgård Beach scouting the location planning where to shoot and film. Monday we went for a walk to Århus Botaniske Have, not far from where I stayed. The location were not as I had thought it would be, so after the shoot Tuesday, we visited Århus University which worked perfectly as a backdrop for my second shoot.
Tuesday Stinne showed up at around 9 o’clock in the morning ready for make-up and hair. We started shooting at the beach around one and were done around four. The second day we started hair and make-up around noon and were done shooting at the university around six pm. Friday I meet my second model Stephanie in the town centre of Århus, taking the bus to Bellevue Beach around two pm. Mimoza tagged along fixing hair and make-up. This day we concentrated mainly of shooting film for the art piece. That evening I had around 700 images to pick down to 30 for post processing.
Sunday afternoon I arrived back home in Trondheim starting post processing my photos, final touch and stitched together in a PDF were done last night before starting editing the art piece.

Nikon Norge – Nikon D7000

Before I left for Denmark I sent Nikon Norge an email asking them if I could borrow a DSLR with filming capability for testing and for my little art piece. They were as kind as to lend me a Nikon D7000 and a Nikon Nikkor 17-55 f/f2.8 through Camera & Videoteknikk AS. Since I have a Nikon D700 as a main camera and have shot with Nikon the last three years D7000 was fairly easy to operate. Just a little flick of a switch and start the live-view-mode and press the record button. Without a Hoodman Loupe I had some problems focusing, but mounting the camera to a tripod using it as a shoulder-rig I got a bit more stability event though it’s not perfect. I had also some problems with skin-tone in my film-clips, but I figured it was just my novice-experience that was the reason.

Tomorrow at 9 am. we are having the last evaluation before final exam. Four weeks, maybe 80 – 100 photos, 8 – 10 different styles, including fashion, architecture, commercial and portrait.

On Wednesdays group photography at Norsk Fotofagskole I got snap-shot by Vegard Eggen, a photographer from Adresseavisen, during the building of the image with Rita Ottervik, Mayor of Trondheim. The photo was published in todays newspaper in the cultural section. After skimming through the story, I found out that there were a lot of more or less important politicians from the cultural department of Norway.
